Confirming top hat design

Hello all,

Ive been lurking around there for a while, but finally am ready to build my first baffle.

My system will consist of 5" HVAC duct feeding into a top hat Thein baffle, sitting on a 35 gallon steel garbage can -> Harbor Freight impeller housing -> HF Seperator (which has plastic bag on the bottom and a Wynn cartridge filter on top).

I would like to confirm two design matters.  From reading past threads, the following seem to hold true:

1 - A side inlet to the Thein baffle performs better than a top inlet.  This seems to be the consensus of past threads I have read.
2 - A neutral vane, while useful in other seperators, decreases Thein baffle performance.

If I could get some confirmation or argument against these points, I would appreciate it.

New to this please explain side inlet, are you saying make the lid like a top hat with the inlet on the side rather than flat ??

300e, here is a tophat separator. The side inlet refers to the duct inlet coming in from the side and the outlet in the top center. In the original version that you see on the website's front page, both the inlet and the outlet came down through the top.

Thanks for pic it is as I thought would suspect it is more efficient than top loading
