Location (angle) of dropout in VAWoodworker's Design

Hello!
I see VAWoodwork's design has a lot of followers in the Phil Thein site, and I am preparing to make a variation of it as well. I have a question on the angle orientation of the baffle cut out. It looks like he picked the end of the dropout to be parallel with the inlet pipe. I have seen other posts where Phil recommends putting the inlet at the beginning of the non-cutout area, which would have moved the drop out area further away on your design. Did you find your method/angle worked better?

One additional question on transforming the original baffle design into the 6" inlet VAWoodworker design: how high should the exit pipe be from the top of the baffle? In the original "plans" instructions it mentions that it is 2" above the baffle, but this is for a shop vac. The height that VAWoodworker used is greater than that - closer to 6". Is there a rule of thumb that should be used that takes into consideration the inlet diameter and the distance from the ceiling to the baffle? Or am I just over thinking this?

Examples from my design:
Inlet pipe is 6.25 OD
Distance from ceiling of separator to the top of the baffle: 8.5"

My rule of thumb is 1/2 the diameter of the pipe.  So for a 6" pipe, make it extend 3" below the baffle.
