Good afternoon

Any opinions on building a separator using a Lee Valley (Veritas) Cyclone Lids as the top piece?

The inlet is already at 45 degress which should lessen the negative impact on flow.

Other than they are expensive... They really DO look like they are set up right. But then again, what else would expect from Lee Valley / Veritas?

I wouldn't bother with the clear lid, unless you are feeling like making a baffle out of acrylic. Actually an acrylic baffle and standoffs would be awfully cool with a clear lid...

I have a black one already in use. I agree that clear would be cool though.

Has anyone used both the Lee Valley and the Thien baffle, I'm curious as to how they compare.

The Grizzly model is a simple intake on the side to an outake on the side.... The Lee Valley / Thien lids share a common factor of the output being in the center of the lid. This makes the output air have to turn inward to get to the outlet, instead of following the path of least resistance. Simply put, I do not believe the Grizzly design would be all that effective at any sort of separation aside from the heaviest chunks...

I have.

I feel my design provides better initial separation and I don't feel the LV unit resists scrubbing at all.

I was also disappointed when using the LV lid and saw it pucker when the inlet hose was blocked.

Thanks Phil,

That's good to hear - I'm currently in the process of building one of your units for 5" pipe using a side inlet.   I've got the can & pipes all fit and just need to get some material for the baffle and make it.

Thanks so much for sharing your design.
