I'm building a 4" version and wonder how far below the lid the outlet pipe should extend if at all.  Should the inlet elbow rest on the baffle?

From my experience building these... The inlet elbow should touch the baffle. And the outlet tube should extend no more than halfway between the lid and the baffle. I have had the best luck right at about 1/3, so for example if yours is 4" deep, then 1-1/3" (ish) should work well for you.

Thank you, I appreciate your response.

Leaving some room between the elbow and the baffle will prevent dust from packing in between the two.  1/2" to 1" is sufficient, depending on the type of materials you work with (softer pine, with stringy shavings, needs a little more room so I'd go 1" if you work with a lot of it).

The outlet tube should extend about 1-1/2" into the chamber.

Hmmm... I hadn't thought of room for shavings to go under... Only issue I have had with shavings is sticking on screw tips, which went away when I hot glued the fittings on and did away with the screws...
