This is exactly what I have attempted with my JET... however, I'm still getting a lot of dust and stuff up in the filter.

I think my gap is not big enough.  The problem is that the bag attaches INSIDE the thing with a ring spring thingie (technical definition) - and may reduce flow.

BTW - I'm a UNIX admin, too.

Last week I made the gap wider.  I'll see how that improved it.  Maybe take some pix if that didn't do it for me.

Are you going to post again and tell us how it works?

1. Thanks - good idea!

2. Its not hard on mine to empty the bag - I was more thinking if I decide to put the can in "front" of the intake.

3. yup

4. I used to design websites for extra cash.  My biggie is the Ease of Use and organization...  User experience is everything.

5. YOu could STICKIE the SHOW 'N' TELL as well.

Thanks for getting back to me Phil.

OH-  I just saw something that answered one of my questions - from Phil:

"Plastic is a no-no as far as I'm concerned because it easily collapses and the static that is created from the circulating air causes problems w/ separation."

So two reasons: Static and Collapse

I wonder if that would also answer my garbage bag idea question...

I have read almost every thread on this forum!  First of all, this being my first post, I would like to say THANK YOU!  Good JOBs...

I had a couple questions that, as far as I can tell, have not been asked/addressed.

I already have a great JET DC - and it cost my a pretty penny.  I think one of you guys have it, too.  It's basically the canister filter with the flaps in it and the bag underneath, with the spring ring connector thingie for the bag.

SO - with that background - this is the machine I will be adapting to the Thien design!

1. The trash can gets full.  It has to be emptied (by the wife, right Phil?  haha) and will make a big mess doing that.  Is it possible to have a trash bag/liner in the can while in use?  If not - another idea is an inner trashcan inside the main can and under the baffle - kinda like those fashionable steel kitchen trash cans folks have now-a-days...

2. in regards to MY dc...  I forget who, but they were going to install the baffle directly inside the "exchange" area.  So the Filter flapper thing is on top, and the waste bag is underneath attached with the ring spring thing (hmmm that has a nice ring to it  ;D !!!)... and the baffle is connected right inside there.  The question is, doesn't this defeat the purpose of having the initial trash can separator thing in the first place??  Right?  Am I asking that right?  The idea is to separate as much of the particles BEFORE the get to your filter flapper gizmo...  or so I thought.  I didn't see where this poster had posted his results of this design.  (it was D Romano who was doing this: http://www.jpthien.com/smf/index.php?topic=29.0)

3. someone mentioned having as smooth an interior as possible.  How about a plastic can?

4. In this new forum software, can there be "sticky" threads?  That is, make a MAIN thread that remains at the top of all other and newer threads, that IS THE ACTUAL design and a conglomeration (sp?) of everything that is known.  It would just be a couple posting with all the details the someone needs to march on back to their shop and build this beauty!  Reason I ask is I've pretty much gone through every thread just to get all the facts...  It would be nice to have all that consolidated.

Maybe even just a "Show and Tell" thread where you show off your new/renewed toy!!
