If I had to guess, the whole top portion that I remove to empty the can is roughly about 25 to 30 lbs.  It is kind of a pain to remove, but it sure beats emptying a bag every couple of hours.  Part of the reason it is a little hard to remove is you got to lift it high enough for the baffle to clear the top edge of the can.  If it wasn't for that, it would be a lot easier.  Plus I'm short too.

I don't quite understand what you are describing.  Can you elaborate and be more specific?  Any help that would make it easier instead of lifting off the whole dc unit with the baffle to empty to trash can would be welcomed.

I made my window with 1/8" Plexiglass.  I heated it  up with a small propane torch.  It wasn't hard to do.  The window is mounted with machine screws and nuts with rubber insulation.  No silicone.  Didn't need it.

Yes, I do see the chips spiraling like in a cyclone.  What would be really neat if someone could make the whole cannister out of some clear material and then we could all see how Phil's design does its thing.

Just wanted to add that the reason I added this window is that my DC is mounted directly on top of Phil's cyclone lid to save space and it is quite heavy to lift off every time I want to check if my can is full.

Phil, I am the Robert W. that sent you the pics of my Penn state dc on your baffle set up.  And I am getting good airflow without a bag.  Just a hose directed out.  I think it is too much airflow.  I am using a 4" hose connected to my machines and a 4" dryer type hose blowing out of my garage.  I think I will need to go to a bag in the future.  Like I say, when I do stuff with chips it is fine.  It's when I work with fine sawdust is where it looks like a lot of it exits the dryer hose.

I started doing this with my setup that is pictured on this site as the email from Robert W.  It is the one with the Penn State 1.5 hp DC on top of the trash can.  I am finding out that it would probably be better withg a little back pressure as I think the DC is a bit too strong now.  If I'm doing planing and jointing, no problem.  But with fine stuff like sanding and sawing, I do see some fine stuff coming out of my hose.  I'll probably get a 1 micron bag in the future.  Other than that, the setup works fine.

Hi.  I'm Robert W. that made this setup.  I am now doing what you actually are asking Phil.  I was going to buy a 1 micron bag to replace my cheaper one but I'm trying now to just run a long hose out in the driveway area as I do my woodworking in my garage.  like Phil says, It has a more suction and it seems to be working fine.  I don't see any dust or any chips exiting my outlet hose.  Phil's design works great and I am forever thankful for him to share it with guys like us.
