Bernard, I am curious has to your method for a round to rectangular transition.  If I were to scale this to a 5" pipe - you would take a 2.5*5" length of pipe (12.5") and if I wanted a 8" high opening on the other end make a small 8" x 2" x 2" block and use it as a form (left and right) to square off the end until I had a rectangle approx. 8" x 3.9" ? - How does the transition from round to rectangular work? just hammer away???  Thanks for any assistance on this...

There may be another idea - maybe there is a way to "tag" the posts by the predefined keywords.  If someone would provide a dictionary and then when people posted they could add the tags then a search feature could report all of those posts that delt with say " A tophat design for 5" inlets"

This way you could have posts that spanned multiple topics and still see them.

Just a thought....

I have been lurking on this site for a while and am beginning my build of a top hat. (5" round to rectangular port - Retired2 design with bellmouth, 32gal brute trashcan).

I have some questions on the side window:

1) How necessary is it? Are there other ways to determine how full the can is getting? how much scrubbing is going on?
2) Sources for material? (Polycarbonate at the big box stores is $$$)
3) For those that have been running them for a while - are there scratches on the inside that would change your mind now?
4) What is the minimum thickness of the plastic?

Thanks in advance for all of the great ideas!

I concur - please post your sketchup file.  I am in the process of gathering materials to make a 5" tophat similar to Retired2 and all help will be appreciated.

Also, in particular, the type of plexi/lexan/poly plastic you ended up with.

Thank you VERY much!
