I had a look about locally and one place had something close but not quite..

   Looking at it again I think I can just put some 6" hose over it and seal  it.   The steel duct is about 160mm x 130 so the 6"tube should be able to deform to go over the top with minimal sealing required.   

    I just need to hop in to CAD and draw it up so I can cut it.

    I am unsure about the plans though..   If I follow vawoodworks and pitbulls I know that the height will be just enough to accommodate the tube coming in, 4" in my case.     I know the the slot going around 240 degrees with a 1 1/8th" width.

    What I dont know is if there is a magic number for how far the outlet protrudes in to the middle?  I will use 5" pipe coming out, how far should that go in to the top hat.  From one picture it looks about 50%?

Yes, I think if I was in the states getting parts would be ok.  I have checked the local sites in New Zealand but parts like that are not carried :(

I think the brand was TRUPRO, sold in New Zealand,  it has FM300 as the model and is rated at 2hp, 2900 rpm motor with a 12" impeller I think.

Ah, what the heck, I will just start and see where it goes. 

   From reading it seems like the one that vawoodworker put together seems to be popular so I will follow along those lines and figure out some of the plumbing later.

   Hopefully, at the end of it all,  I will be venting outside and not see dust flying out the side of the house :)

Hi Chuck, thanks for replying!

  I think your idea is good, I have thought about it but I am stuck on how I can take the 6"x4 and a bit" output and get it connected to a pipe.

    I could just make a plate 6x4" with a 4" circle to mount a connector but I wonder if I would be choking it too much, or does it not matter as I will pipe it out with 4" anyway?  It just seems like the transition from rectangle to circle would be rough.

Another quick question..   The collector has the cone you you can see covered in dust.


    It has a central hole ~ 9"   and starts just above the top of the inlet and goes down ~ 2.5"

    What if I was to assemble the top and bottom of the separator around that and left it there..   It would have an effect but would it be good, bad or indifferent?

Hi all, I have just completed a CNC router and given the increased running time the DC will have I need to move it inside for the sake of the neighbors.

   I don't have a lot of space for it and given the fine dust that the router will produce I dont want to use a canister filter, I would prefer to send it outside.

   I dont want to do a pre separator because it seems that what I want to do will be simpler and I am not worried about objects going through the impeller as it will only ever be connected to the router.

   So, before I hack away at the dusty could someone check that the basic principle is ok.

   Attached is a picture of the generic 2hp DC I am dealing with.

   It looks like I will have to cut away the inside  ring which is part of the metal frame and just drop in the separator.   At the top hose will come out and go through a door, possibly a short amount of hose that I can connect/disconnect to a length of PVC pipe mounted on the outside of the house running away.  That way I can disconnect and close the door fully when finished.

   I guess it's the basic separator on the other side of the fan.

   It will all be 4" hose everywhere. 

    The only thing I see different from others is that the intake protrudes in to the separator and if I use my DC as it is the intake is flush.  I dont know if thats a problem or not.

   Any advice appreciated!
