Thien Cyclone Separator Lid Discussion / Opinions needed
September 12, 2018, 09:19:22 PM
Going to set up a new Harbor Freight DC. Need opinions on whether...
1. I should create a baffle in a plastic 55 gallon barrel and position the motor above the barrel like many have done then discharge to the HF can or body with a Wynn filter.
2. Put the baffle within the body of the DC with a 30 gallon barrel below it and a Wynn filter on top.
The latter I've heard does not have any loss of Suction.
I've heard with a separator within a barrel or tophat there is slight loss in performance but the positive being the separator is before the blower fan.
On the fence. Be nice to hear from people who have one or the other. Very much appreciated.

Deciding which way to go on a build. Originally was going to do a 4" 90 elbow for inlet  and a 4" straight outlet into blower intake. Not a top hat design just recessed in a barrel. But started seeing several discussions of having inlet as straight as possible.
Started thinking about using the metal ring with the somewhat cone disc that comes with the Harbor Freight DC on top of the barrel as in a top hat design. Have seen a few done that way and since it has the inlet coming in on the side would eliminate the inlet elbow.
I also would think that cone disc that's in there might help retain rotation longer.... Am I right? The cone disc being the top part of the baffle with an added sheet of plywood over it?
I guess my main question is how important is it to Not have an elbow as an inlet on the top Of a separator?
