Here's a though on mounting your Wynn filter instead of a box for the filter, why not try this adaptation of this mounting.

Thanks retired2, finally found your old post on CW vs. CCW. Very enlightening. I now understand the issue a lot better, my plan is to utilize the blower on top of a top hat or possibly mini cyclone. The air straightener makes a lot of sense, not quite sure how I'm going to go about making the radial fins inside yet, but I'll ponder it and come up with something. The quote you used from Cincinnati Fan regarding the rotation issues is really pertinent in my case as I'm planning on using a nice Cincinnati Dust Master blower I scavenged from one of their 2 stage drum tops as my motor/blower assy. I plan on building a framework stand, much like the one you did. Very nicely done by the way!!!!

Not sure the topic is stated correctly, but the question is if you have a blower and moter where the fan is rotating clockwise with the outlet on the right side as pictured and you are building a top hat, would it make a difference as to which side the intake is on? Right side or left side of the top hat if you were looking down at the top hat from the top side? I believe I have seen where this makes a difference in a cyclone (intake on right or left), but what about building a top hat? Also does the drop slot need to be on the on the side opposite of the intake?

Sorry for the amateurish drawings, best I could do ;D

Since no responses, maybe I did not post this with much clarity now that I think about it. I would like to reuse the motor and blower off this 2 stage collector on building a top hat type Thien separator. This is a 1 HP unit with about 700 CFM as it is. The plan in my mind is to mount the blower motor separately on framework and utilize a top hat underneath with the dust can. Has anyone ever tried repurposing this type of blower unit or should I be looking to find something different? I notice the exhaust of this unit is on the opposite side of the blower housing as compared to others I have seen. Does it matter whether the blower spins clockwise or counterclockwise? Or, am I just wasting my time with these ideas since this is already a 2 stage unit?

I am looking for some advice regarding a potential Thien separator build. I currently have 2 Delta 2 stage dust collectors, the drum top type. One is a ¾ HP 580 CFM unit that is almost pristine condition. I plan to use this unit dedicated only to my table saw. I have a second one, a 1 HP 700 CFM unit that I would like to repurpose the blower/motor in a designed Thien unit. A photo of the unit is below. In perusing the forum, it appears that most builds are utilizing single stage blowers from single stage units. Obviously, removal of the lid on the 2 stage unit I have would be necessary to utilize the blower, correct? Any ideas, suggestions, criticisms are all welcome, as this will be my first attempt at this.
