Title: Eliminate motor tub?
Post by: weirdwilbur on May 21, 2012, 10:36:32 AM
The video demonstrates the efficacy of your baffle design. Elegant work. I am ignorant about these things so I must ask for help.
Now that the sucked stuff stops at the first container, what is the purpose of the, now relative empty, vacuum cleaner tank?
Can I eliminate that tank and mount the motor on top of the hat at the exhaust port of the first tank? (I need to save space in my one-car garage.) Obviously this would require additional engineering for a HEPA unit in the design, but thats off-the-shelf stuff.
It's OK to laugh. I get that a lot. But might it work? Just asking.

No separator gets 100%.  You either have to send the air through a final filter, or exhaust it outside, to avoid filling your shop with air containing very fine dust.

So the purpose of the tub is to hold the filter, and provide that final stage.

I agree. The present norm is indeed the fine particle engineering that I mentioned.

Unless the tub volume is critical, might I not reduce it's size? What ill effects on the system might I expect to see?

Really no downside to reducing the size of the drum.
