Title: Shape of dust container
Post by: corydoras on July 18, 2011, 09:39:13 AM
If I choose to go with this type of design: http://www.jpthien.com/smf/index.php?topic=431.0 (http://www.jpthien.com/smf/index.php?topic=431.0)
Does it matter if the container is square or round underneath the baffle lid?

Will the airflow inside the lid/baffle be interupted in any way as the flow of dust circulating downwoards, will have no "wall" to cling to aftre passing the slot in the baffle?

I thought you would have had a few replies to this question, but I guess no one has built a square collector box.

There has been plenty of discussion on the shape or pattern of dust at the bottom of the collector bin and speculation about airflow in the bin being important. My personal opinion (not proven) is that the shape does not matter, as long as your chamber is round.

I believe that the air is moving around in the collector container purely because the air above is 'dragging' it, hence the swirl patterns in the dust. The square box will affect this swirl pattern, but should not affect the collection in any way.

I reiterate, this is pure theorizing and if I am wrong, I will accept wrist slap in writing like a man. If it works or not, please report back your results.

Correct.  The bottom doesn't have to be round.

Thanx guys, then Ill make it square.
Hard to find suitable barrels/trash cans in Norway, so Ill make one out of flywood and seal it.

I`ll post some pictures when Im done

Does flywood = plywood?

Don't make it too heavy.  The sawdust will add considerable weight.

he he, yup, it was supposed to be plywood. (dont know why I put an F there, it is not remotely near the P on the keyboard...mabye because plywood starts with an F in my language?)
I have unlimited accsess to free 9mm baltic birch plywood, so i think i will make one from that, and put castors on it to wheel it out.

I might be able to get a plastic chemical 50 gallon barrel, but the config might be to tall for my 6,2' basement shop.
dont know yest what i will settle for.
