Title: How do you fasten the wood top to the metal trash can?

Hello everyone ,
Great site here.
I have a question about how the wood top seals to a metal trash can.
I see that a rabbet is cut in the top to make a nice tight fit but it seems like some sort of gasket would be needed.
How are you guys getting a good seal on the can?

The rabbet, if cut right, provides a nice tight fit / seal.Any tighter I would be afraid I would collapse the trash can...
