Title: THANKS, New member here.
Post by: Chuck on April 03, 2009, 05:34:21 AM
Thanks for taking the time to figure out how to do this. I only have a shop vac for my DC.  I do mostly wood turning & my shop is only 8' x 8' but I have it jam packed with stuff I will be trying to make one soon.

Question: Is it possible to muffle the sound? by this I mean what would using something similar to this do to the performance?

Thanks for the help

Did a quick google search for "shop vac muffler" and got this.

I remember a while back there was a tip in a mag about making one yourself. Basically making like an automotive style muffler for the exhaust. Some PVC and foam should do the trick, or help.  I have a store bought diffuser for mine, it helps, but for me it was more so that it doesn't kick UP more dost when I'm using it.

I don't think the think you posted will work for a shop vac, but I think that idea is good. Something to break up the air flow, absorb some noise, but not impact your airflow.

Seeing that makes me cringe at the thought of major airflow restrictions...

Not sure about your DC, but when my DC is running, I am usually using some big, loud machine anyway, and am wearing hearing protectors, so it isn't a problem...

Here's another link I found to a roll your own style. I bet you could alter the size to suit.
